Disaster Relief

On September 27, 2024 our region was hit by the remnants of Hurricane Helene. Widespread flooding, wind damage and mudslides caused roads to wash away and entire towns to disappear. In Northeast Tennessee, the areas most impacted are Washington, Carter, Unicoi, Johnson and Greene Counties. The United Ways of Northeast Tennessee are assisting in the local disaster recovery efforts.

A Disaster Relief Fund has been created by United Way of East Tennessee Highlands to provide additional funds to non-profits assisting with disaster response. 100% of this fund will be distributed among all effected counties and no administrative fees will be taken. Click below to donate.

The Do's & Don'ts of Disaster Recovery

DON'T self-deploy to disaster areas.  Many areas in our community are still in search and rescue mode. Large groups may hinder their efforts.

DON'T send clothing. Clothing requires a lot of time sorting, laundering and can be burdensome for survivors to carry around. Instead, support local organizations or organized efforts to distribute clothing.

DON'T go sightseeing in disaster areas. Don't create added traffic jams and congestion in affected areas.

DON'T  neglect your mental health. Disaster fatigue is real and it's ok to sign off/step away or step back when you need a break.

DO visit www.volunteer-united.org for a list of volunteer opportunities for areas in need.

DO donate water and supplies at a designated drop zone when requested, or visit unitedwayetnh.org/help to contribute to the Disaster Relief Fund.

DO support small business.  Visit www.regionahead.com to find out more.

DO pay attention to exhaustion, and take care of yourself when volunteering. Bring water and food with you if you are in an area where supplies are limited.
